22nd Sunday after Pentecost

Readings and Psalm

Isaiah 53:4-12
The suffering servant

Psalm 91:9-16
You have made the Lord your refuge, and the Most High your habitation. (Ps. 91:9)

Hebrews 5:1-10
Through suffering Christ becomes the source of salvation

Mark 10:35-45
Warnings to ambitious disciples

NOTE: Today’s Gospel Reading includes the metaphor of slavery to describe discipleship. Given the horrific history of slavery in our country, we recognize the difficulties of this metaphor and the cultural differences between the ancient world and our own. We reject all interpretations of scripture that promote bondage of any kind. Rather, this church proclaims: “There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for all of you are one in Christ Jesus.” (Gal. 3:28)
