Wednesday worship during Lent

Worship Theme: You Shall Love the Lord Your God

“Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one.  You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.”  (Deut. 6:4-5, quoted by Jesus in Mark 12:29-30)

The passage above (along with Deut. 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41) is a liturgical prayer known in Hebrew as the Shema. When someone asks Jesus what the most important commandment is he responds with the Shema, as rabbis throughout the ages have taught. Many Jewish people recite the Shema twice daily—at morning and evening prayer. It is written on the parchment inside the containers affixed to the door frames of many Jewish households (mezuzahs) and inside the small leather boxes worn on the arm and head of Jewish boys and men (tefillin). What can this pivotal prayer of our parent religion teach us about being faithful Christians?

As we journey together through Lent, a time for deepening our relationship with God and one another, we will explore the Shema. Each Wednesday night in Lent, we will gather for dinner at 5:30 p.m. (except Ash Wednesday) and for worship at 6:30 p.m. May our reflections lead us to respond to our steadfast God whose love is stronger than death (or life or anything else) with renewed commitment.
