For this Sunday following Independence Day, we celebrate with a choral anthem by the early American composer, William Billings (1746-1800). Billings’ style was recognized as uniquely “American” in sound, and he became a leading composer in teaching and religious circles. Many of his anthems are settings of Isaac Watts’ biblical based poetry, such as today’s text—a portion of Watts’ paraphrase of Isaiah 61:10.
